Heat Pump and Air Conditioning Maintenance in Bristol
Air-to-air heat pumps and air conditioners are reliable, but they collect dust, pollen, cooking grease and the odd spider. Over time the filters clog, the coils foul, drains block and small refrigerant leaks reduce output. A yearly service keeps the system efficient, quiet and hygienic, and is normally a condition of the manufacturer’s extended warranty.
We service and repair split systems, multi-splits and air-to-water heat pumps across Bristol, including systems installed by other companies.
What We Do on a Service
Indoor units
- Remove, wash and refit the filters;
- clean the coil, the barrel fan and the louvres;
- flush and test the condensate tray, pump and drain;
- check the remote, sensors and every operating mode.
Outdoor units
- Clean the coil and clear leaves and debris from the fins;
- check the fan, brackets and anti-vibration feet;
- inspect pipe insulation, trunking and wall seals.
System checks
- Measure temperatures and pressures in heating and cooling;
- look for signs of refrigerant leaks;
- test electrical connections and safety devices;
- write up the results and flag anything that needs attention.
Gas-side work is reserved for our F-gas qualified engineers. Larger systems can require periodic leak checks and records under F-gas rules; we’ll tell you if yours does.
Signs Something Is Wrong
- Rooms take longer to warm up or never reach the set temperature.
- Water drips from the indoor unit.
- A musty or damp smell when the unit starts.
- New rattles, buzzing or grinding noises.
- Frost on the outdoor coil that’s still there after defrosting.
- An error code on the indoor display or remote.
- Electricity bills creeping up with no change in use.
Repairs
First the diagnosis, then a plain explanation and a price — repairs only start when you’ve agreed. Common jobs include clearing blocked drains, replacing fan motors, sensors and PCBs, finding and fixing refrigerant leaks and re-charging the system. On tired, inefficient kit we’ll give you a straight view on fixing versus replacing; a qualifying replacement might attract £2,500.
Inherited a System?
Many Bristol homes and offices come with air conditioning or heat pumps fitted by a previous owner, sometimes with no paperwork. We can inspect it, identify the make and model, check it’s safe and working, and give you a clear picture of its condition and remaining life.
Why Clean Units Cost Less to Run
A heat pump works by passing air across its coils. When filters clog and coils are coated in grime, less air gets through, the system has to work harder and it uses more electricity for the same comfort. Compressors and fan motors also wear faster. A thorough clean often restores noticeable output, especially on systems that haven’t been serviced for a few years.
City Grime and Outdoor Units
Units on busy roads, near the river or in city-centre courtyards pick up traffic grime, leaves and litter, and those near the Avon and Severn see more salt and moisture in the air. Fins can corrode and brackets loosen over time. We clean outdoor coils carefully and check fixings on every visit.
Your Part Between Visits
- Filters: pop them out, rinse under a warm tap, air-dry and clip back in, roughly monthly in busy periods.
- Outdoor unit: keep it clear of leaves, bins, plants and stored furniture.
- Watch and listen: report new noises, smells, drips or error codes early.
- Leave the rest: the refrigerant circuit and electrics are for qualified engineers only.
How Often?
Annually suits most households — spring ahead of the warm months, or September ahead of the cold. Kitchens, salons and dusty workplaces may need more frequent visits. Between services, rinse indoor filters every few weeks in heavy use.
Air-to-Water Heat Pumps
Air-to-water systems need an annual service too: outdoor unit, water pressure and filters, cylinder, expansion vessels, controls and performance checks. Regular servicing keeps running costs down and the warranty valid.
Repair or Replace?
Older systems can often be kept going with good maintenance. Once breakdowns become regular, spares dry up or the gas inside is being phased out, a new system often makes more sense. Today’s units are quieter and thriftier, and where the new one becomes the room’s main heating, the £2,500 grant may apply. We’ll set out both options with prices so you can decide.
Seasonal Checks
Before winter, it helps to make sure the outdoor unit is clear, the drain outlet isn’t blocked and the timers are set for colder mornings. Before summer, a filter clean and a quick test in cooling mode avoids discovering a problem in the first heatwave, when engineers are busiest. We’re happy to talk you through these on any visit.
Maintenance Plans
If you have several units, a portfolio of rentals or business premises, a plan smooths out the cost and keeps visits on schedule. We send reminders and keep a log of every visit.
Typical Costs
A domestic service typically costs £70 to £250 depending on the system and number of units, with additional units at the same address priced lower. Repairs are quoted after diagnosis.
